ABOUT the IVL

Serving your volleyball needs since 1979

Industrial Volleyball League organizes indoor volleyball leagues in the Bay Area. The IVL sets the standard for excellence in organizing leagues that are designed to provide the most rewarding experience possible for its players.

Season format

The IVL offers four main seasons a year:

  • Winter (early January start)

  • Spring (mid-March)

  • Summer (mid-June)

  • Fall (mid-September)

Each season generally runs for 9 weeks. Team captains can sign up at the website 3-4 weeks before the start of each season.

Who can play?

The IVL welcomes any kind of team, from beginner/novice (what we call our Recreational B) to the very best players who would compete in our league. With many different levels to choose from, we can guarantee you'll find a league where you'll have some fun.

the director

Ryan Bridge took over the IVL in summer 2026 after playing in the leagues for nearly 20 years. A Bay Area native, Ryan grew up in Mountain View and Sunnyvale, attended Homestead High School and went on to compete at the club level for UC San Diego.

Over the past two decades, Ryan has built a life around volleyball as a player, coach, and community organizer. He has over a decade of coaching experience with programs including Bay to Bay Volleyball Club, Stanford Club, and UCSD Club. He currently competes as a setter for the Bay Area Dimes in the Volleyball League of America (VLA), traveling to high-level tournaments nationwide and playing exhibition matches against local college programs like UC Santa Cruz, Stanford, and Menlo College.

Now, as head of the IVL, Ryan is channeling that experience into growing adult volleyball across Northern California by expanding league offerings, raising the level of play, and building a community where players of every level can belong.

the founder

Kirk Anderson founded the IVL in 1979 and incorporated it in 1985, building it into a cornerstone of South Bay recreational volleyball for over four decades. A lifelong volleyball ambassador, Kirk coached at Menlo-Atherton High School for 15 years, taught classes for the Menlo Park Recreation Department for 19 years, and competed at the U.S. National Championships 25 times — earning numerous medals with his team, Kings Mountain Fog. He served on the Northern California Volleyball Association board and worked as a TV commentator for collegiate and national matches. Beyond the game, Kirk pioneered charitable volleyball events in the Bay Area and led the IVL in supporting organizations like Friends For Youth and Wipeout Cancer. His dedication introduced thousands of people to volleyball, and his legacy lives on in the IVL community he built.
